Description: Join us for Tai Chi in the living room of the Van Vleck House.  Tai Chi is a centuries-old internal Chinese martial art practiced in a meditative, slow, gentle, and graceful sequence of movements that has been shown to enhance health, relaxation, and self cultivation and is practiced by millions worldwide.  Tai Chi may be adapted to suit nearly anyone, regardless of physical condition.

Flower Anatomy

Description: Join garden manager Laura Roberts to explore flowers and their parts.  Marvel at the diversity of shapes achieved by just a few basic structures and gain insight on the significance of flower structure in plant classification.  A hands-on component will familiarize participants with flower related botanical vocabulary through dissection of samples from the Van Vleck grounds.

Landscape by the Yard--Practical tips for the home gardener

The four-part series will be led by noted landscape designer Lisa Mierop, owner/operator of Mierop Design, a residential landscape design/build firm that services high-end residential projects in and around Montclair, and landscaper Frank J. Contey, owner/operator of Terra Graphics Landscape Services, who collaborates with Mierop on projects.  The two transformed the former tennis court on the Van Vleck property into an all-season formal garden. 

Class fee: $30 for members, $35 for non-members.  Series fee (includes all 4 classes): $108 for members, $126 for non-members. Series Dates: March 12, April 16, May 14, June 11.

Planting and Caring for New Plants – Previewing the 2014 Van Vleck Plant Sale:

Discussing highlights of unusual or unique trees, shrubs and perennials, many available in this year's plant sale, Lisa and Frank will draw upon their 20+ years of hands-on growing experience  in this area – including advice on how to install and care for new garden additions. Explore some of the new and unusual options available today, along with ideas for great containers and planting tips to help maximize and prolong the show while minimizing maintenance. Shade-Sun Gardening (Emphasis on Perennials):

Experience is the best teacher when it comes to plants that work best for gardens in this area. Changes in climate, your soil, drainage and light all inform what you can plant that will thrive. Lisa Mierop will go over a short list of favorite sun and shade success stories based on her 20 years of gardening and designing in the Montclair area. Watercolor in the Garden

Taught by one of MAM’s most beloved and well-respected instructors, Sharon Pitts, this special course will give students the opportunity to study watercolor en plein air. Held exclusively at Van Vleck House and Garden, this course will draw inspiration from the bountiful beauty and colors of spring. Using a variety of special techniques, students will work with color, value, and composition to capture the essence of spring in watercolor. Personal expression and individuality is encouraged in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

Plein Air Painting in the Garden

Join one on MAM’s senior teaching artists in seeing Van Vleck House and Garden from a painter’s point of view. Students will capture the beauty of the spring landscape while creating studies using pen and ink, gouache and watercolor, then working towards longer, finished pieces in any medium. We will address composition and perspective using easily portable supplies and a customized, personal limited palette. All classes will be held in the Garden weather permitting. Open to students of all levels and any medium.

Shooting Natural Light Portraits on Location

Photography is all about the light and how it shapes and forms the world around us. Learning to see light in this way is the key to finding and capturing interesting photographs of your subject no matter what it is. In this workshop we will explore using natural light, reflectors and fill flash to create exceptional outdoor portraits. The workshop will be taught on location at the beautiful Van Vleck House and Gardens. We will use its classic architecture and gardens as backgrounds for our portraits. Topics we will cover include: finding, controlling and working with natural light; selecting a background for your portrait; controlling depth of field; taking full body, three quarter, or head and shoulder portraits; lens selection; posing techniques; and when to use reflectors and diffusers.

The Still Life in the Garden

Date: Saturday, May 31

Time: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Instructor: Teri Bartolo

Enjoy creating your own still life from the resources at the Van Vleck greenhouse. Flowers, potted plants, gardening tools, vegetables, flora and fauna, as well as garden ornaments (yard birds!) will be used. Emphasis will be placed upon the composition of the arrangement, as well as the details of the chosen subject matter, especially flowers and leaves. Shapes, color, textures, the use of natural lighting, and shadows will be discussed as we develop our painterly works of art.

Botanical Studies in Gouache

Date: Monday, May 19

Time: 1 – 4 pm

Instructor: Kristine Lombardi

Create beautiful, colorful studies of the blooms and plants at Van Vleck House and Gardens in gouache. Gouache is a very vivid, intense pigment that is perfect for capturing the hues of spring flowers. Students familiar with working in watercolor will enjoy trying this more opaque version of paint.
