Sunset SENSE-ations

Friday, July 24, 6:30p.m.

Join us on Friday, July 24, for a family-friendly evening of discovery as we explore the creatures, sights and sounds in nature after the sun sets. There will be activities, crafts and live nocturnal animals. This event begins at 6:30 pm – Rain or Shine. Admission is $25/family; $20/family for Friends of Van Vleck. Summer Concert Series Englewinds
Sunday, August 9th, 6p.m.

Van Vleck continues its summer concert series with a performance by Englewinds on Sunday, August 9th at 6 pm. Englewinds is an eco-music ensemble performing music by living composers and specializing in music that creates environmental awareness. Tickets for this event are $5/person; children under 12 are free. The gates will open at 5 pm so you can enjoy a stroll through the gardens or picnic dinner before the performance.

This program is made possible in part from the support received from the NJ Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by Essex County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs.

Cats in the Garden III

Sunday, July 12, 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. NEW

The NJ Jaguar Touring Club returns to Van Vleck for a third year on Sunday, July 12. Come for a stroll from 12-3 and view seven decades of vintage, classic and modern Jaguars to display in our gardens. Take a chance on a free Jaguar weekend rental courtesy of our sponsors Madison Jaguar and Bergen Jaguar. Fee is $5 per person with children under 12 free. All proceeds support the care and maintenance of our grounds.

and Van Vleck House & Gardens team up again this year to host a family-friendly open-air concert for children of all ages on Sunday, July 12 at 6pm. Bring a lawn chair, or spread a blanket, but chances are you'll be on your feet dancing when Rebecca Frezza and Big Truck start playing.
Tickets are $10 per family in advance, or $15 per family at the door. All proceeds support our year-round children's programming. The Little Gym and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by the Essex County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs helped to make this evening possible.

From Roses to Rock Gardens Annual Garden Tour
Friday, June 5 & Saturday, June 6, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Enjoy a private walking tour of seven spectacular local gardens in Montclair, rain or shine! Ticket prices are $30 General Admission, $25 for Friends of Van Vleck. Group tours are encouraged with a special multi-ticket purchase offer this year; buy 3 tickets, get the 4th free. Tickets may be used on either Friday, June 5 or Saturday, June 6.

On June 5, the Tour will open with at Van Vleck House & Gardens with a coffee reception from 9:30-11am. Marta McDowell, noted Garden Consultant and Educator, will provide a preview of the Tour and an informative presentation on gardening tips, "Got Dirt? Make the Best of What You've Got - and Your Budget - for Your 2009 Backyard Stay-cation".

New this year is an optional bus tour and refreshment package, offered in partnership with the Montclair Arts Council’s “DestinationMontclair” campaign. For an additional $25 per person, we are offering two tour packages on June 5th only:

   * Morning Tour with Box Lunch – Board an air-conditioned mini-bus after the Friday
      morning lecture and visit all seven gardens. The Tour ends at approximately
      1:30pm at the Van Vleck House, where you’ll relax with a delicious box lunch.

   * Afternoon Tour with Wine & Cheese – The Tour begins at 1pm at Van Vleck with
      a docent-guided walk of the historic grounds. You’ll then board an air-
      conditioned mini-bus that stops at all seven gardens, returning at approximately
      4pm where you’ll enjoy wine and cheese on the terrace.

What better way to kick off the spring planting season than with a visit to the The Annual Van Vleck House & Gardens Plant Sale.  Offering unique and unusual shrubs, vines, perennials, tender perennials and trees, many of the plants for sale are closely associated with the gardens, including plants favored by the late Howard Van Vleck.  Experts will be on hand to answer questions and help visitors navigate the sale. Potted planters, plants and garden accessories make great Mother's Day gifts. This annual event offers something for everyone, from the veteran gardener to weekend warrior.

Pruning Class with Marta McDowell - *SOLD OUT*
Saturday, March 28,
10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Don’t miss this hands-on pruning workshop led by Marta McDowell.  Learn the proper techniques of pruning, when and what to prune and the right tools needed for the job.  Participants will have the opportunity to assist in pruning various plants throughout the gardens and to ask questions regarding plants on the property.

Trip to Philadelphia Flower Show
Wednesday, March 4, 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.

 

The landscapes, gardens, and culture of Italy serve as inspiration for the 2009 Philadelphia Flower Show theme, “Bella Italia.” Join the celebration of the natural beauty of Italy as top landscape and floral designers create gardens that pay tribute to Italy’s many distinctive regions and cities.  Relax on the bus while Van Vleck House & Gardens provides tips on how to see and enjoy the show.  There will be ample time to browse, shop and dine at your leisure.

 

This trip is in conjunction with the Adult School of Montclair and departs from the Walnut Street parking Lot.


Maple Sugaring Display
Normal business hours until March 5th 

Come to Van Vleck for a display of the process of making Maple Syrup. The Sugar Maple Tree in Mother's Garden will be tapped, and if the weather cooperates, the sap will be flowing.     .
 
Visitors are invited to learn how to identify Sugar Maple trees and discover the steps for turning sap into syrup.

8th Annual Festival Presents Winter Wonderland November 20-22

Our annual showcase and silent auction features trees, wreaths, and mantel decorations that are all hand made by local artists and designers. Additionally, The Garden Cottage of Fairfield will set up a boutique in the library with an array of elegant home furnishings and accessories for sale.
Public viewing hours are Friday,
November 21, from 10 am to 5 pm, and Saturday, November 22, from 12 noon to 2 pm. These showcase hours offer a rare opportunity for the public to tour the interior of the Van Vleck House. General Admission is $5; children under 12 are free. The opening event kicks off on Thursday evening, November 20, with a unique and festive approach to wine tasting, the Sparklers & Ice wine and dessert party.
